The Connection between Exercise and Your Mental Health 

Countless studies show a strong connection between exercise and mental health. Recent, larger studies have begun to add even more solid data to support that relationship. In the latest study on the interplay of exercise and wellbeing, or sense of purpose, researchers at the University of Warwick in England looked at data collected on more than 18,000 middle- aged Americans. At the outset of the studies and a few years later, they found a clear correlation between respondents who had a sense of purpose and their level of physical activity. A member of the research team told the New York Times that “people often report more self-efficacy” after they take up exercise. 

Everyday Activities Count

Even routine activities like climbing stairs can enhance wellbeing. A team in Germany looked inside 83 people’s brains to find evidence. Using magnetic resonance imaging, they found an area in the brain’s cortex that mediates the relationship between physical activity and subjective energy levels reported by the individuals. They found that alertness and energy were important components of well-being and psychic health. 

The most important aspect of mental health for many of us is retaining strong cognitive skills as we get older. A study of 500,000 people with an average age of 58 at University College London suggests people with prediabetes were 42% more likely to have cognitive decline over four years. Physical activity can be one of the most effective ways to treat prediabetes and fend off diabetes and this cognitive decline. Many participants didn’t even know they had elevated blood sugar levels. Regular monitoring of biomarkers like those in the GoodCell Baseline Health Panel can alert you if you are on a path to prediabetes.
